Challenging literary and other texts can be effective with KS3 learners, supporting vocabulary growth and increasing motivation. Different learners benefit from varied approaches and text types.
Twice a year, a week of lessons is dedicated to a longer, challenging text. The activities in this week balance personal, emotional, and imaginative engagement with explicit focus on vocabulary and grammar. Pre-, during-, and post-reading/listening tasks are designed to sustain the students' interest and to be meaningful, making understanding the text essential to providing an answer to the task. The activities include an element of challenge and encourage the evaluation of language use in context.
